What the reserve is for, and what needs its own pot

The fastest way to empty an emergency fund is to let every large expense use the name. Once the fund pays for a phone, a wedding gift, and a planned journey, it is no longer there for the week the income stops. The households that keep a reserve for more than a year are usually the ones who wrote down what the money is allowed to do.

Interruptions that fit

Income that stops for days or weeks, when the stall, the boat, the tapping, or the wage is interrupted. A repair that keeps someone earning: the motorcycle that is the only way to the market, the fridge a drinks stall cannot trade without, a roof leak that will ruin stock if it waits. A medical bill that cannot be postponed. Travel to sit with a parent who is ill, when the trip was not on any calendar. These are the withdrawals the reserve is built for.

Costs that deserve another name

A wedding, a new telephone, a visit you have been planning, a down payment you have discussed since last year, school fees you can see coming, and the new tyres you already know the motorcycle will need. Each of these can be large. None of them is a surprise. Give them their own pots, even if the pots are only envelopes. When they have their own names, they stop pretending to be emergencies.

A simple test helps at the kitchen table. Did the household know this cost was coming before the month began? If the answer is yes, it is a plan. Plans are funded on a schedule. The reserve stays untouched so that an actual interruption still has somewhere to land.

When there is not enough for every pot

A small income cannot feed five envelopes in the same month. Choose an order and write it down. Many households in this office put the first month of essential costs into the reserve before they fund anything pleasant. After that, the nearest dated bill — often the school term — comes next. A wedding that is a year away can wait its turn. The order will feel strict in a good month and like a relief in a bad one.
