What households said after the note was in their hands.

These accounts name the engagement and the constraint the household brought. They are written from conversations held at the office, in the household’s own voice.

Malee Charoenphon · morning market stall Household Emergency Fund Plan

The May school fee used to empty the only savings book we had. Naree made us put the fee in a second account and keep a smaller reserve just for a week when the stall cannot open. I still check the fee account on the first of the month because I do not trust myself yet. The reserve has been touched once, for a tyre, and we put the amount back over three market weeks the way the note said.

Somchai Rueangrit Shared Household Conversation

My wife and I had been taking from the same envelope without telling each other until the envelope was flat. Ninety minutes felt long until we tried to define a gift to my brother. We left with one sentence: gifts come from the market money that week, and the envelope is for the house. We have argued since, but not about that envelope.

Patcharin Kongkaew · secondary-school teacher Reserve Adequacy Review

I thought 40,000 baht was “about three months” because someone at the branch had said so. The review put my rent, food, and the motorcycle loan at roughly 18,000. The balance covered two months, not three, once I stopped counting the festival money I had mixed in. I wanted the page to feel more generous. It was more useful that it was exact.

Anong Srisawat Reserve Adequacy Review

The meeting showed the account was short by about one month of rent and fuel. That was the part I came for. I had also hoped for a list of banks and a recommendation of which book to open. They stayed with the amount and the refill rule, and I chose the branch myself the following Saturday. That was less than I asked for. The figure is the part I still use.

A longer account

The year the fishing stretched

Abdulrahman Sama-ae works with a coastal crew. In a good stretch the cash arrives in handfuls. In a poor stretch the household eats from what was set aside, or from a relative. For years the quiet month was treated as bad luck, even though the family could name it before the rains settled.

Farida sat with him and his wife for the Seasonal Income Reserve. They marked the last year in heavy, ordinary, and thin months on a strip of paper. The heavy months were asked to carry a larger share into a separate account. The thin months were written as a pause in contributions, not as a collapse of the plan. On top of the expected quiet, they set a further amount for a month that ran longer than the season they already knew.

The following year the quiet stretch matched the strip, and then ran about ten days past it. The further amount covered rice and fuel for those days. Abdulrahman said later that the useful part was not the size of the account. It was that the ordinary quiet month no longer felt like a personal failure. The ten extra days were the part the reserve was actually for. He would have liked the second meeting to be closer to the port; they came to the office instead, because the travel day was clearer. He has asked to redraw the strip after the next season.
